Health Preserving
Meridian Massage (Tuina)
In traditional Chinese medicine, meridians are the body’s major energy pathways. This energy, known as chi, is the vital life force energy. While this energy is thought to exist throughout the entire body, it is concentrated through the meridians.
In therapeutic services such as acupuncture, acupressure, and Chinese cupping therapy, pain is understood as the blockage of chi. If stagnation, congestion, and blockage of chi energy lead to discomfort and pain throughout the body, a healthy flow of chi contributes to more energy, increased health, and decreased pain.
Practitioners who work with pressure points along the body’s meridians aim to keep chi flowing smoothly throughout the entire body.
If you are suffering from poor health or you have experienced an injury, you may not have considered massage as a way to improve your well-being. However, meridian massage can help to re-balance your system and enhance your overall health:

- Hormonal regulation for weight management

The ancient Chinese observed that there are various natural phenomena in the natural world which are both opposite and connected. The concept of “Yin and Yang” is summarised by philosophical thinking. The sky/ground, cold/heat, day/night, cold/heat, up/down, moving/static. Both Yin and Yang are opposite and mutually restrictive. Neither can be separated from the other but exist alone. Always in the movement of mutual transformation, there is yang in the yin and yin in the yang. Taking the sun and the moon as an example: the sun rises (yang growth) – the temperature rises in the afternoon (yangness) – Sun sets in the West (yang fading) – the moon comes out (yin growth) – late night (yinness) – dawn (yin decline) – The sun rises again (yang grows) and the infinite loop resumes.
The concept of Yin and Yang is used throughout the philosophy of Chinese medicine. The substances and functions of the Chinese medicine that have the functions of promoting, warming and stimulating are attributed to “Yang”, and the substances and functions that have the effects of cohesion, moisturisation, and inhibition on the human body are attributed to “Yin”.
The Yin and Yang balance of the human body will be destroyed by long-term stress, bad habits, etc, and the body will have a series of symptoms. Yin Deficiency (Yang Wang Sheng) manifests as: heat in hands and feet, irritability, poor temperament, hot flashes, dry mouth, sore throat, gum inflammation, constipation, sleep disorders, red tongue and the pulse is often powerful. When the yang is weak (yin is vigorous), it manifests as: fatigue, lethargy, cold, edema, muscle aches, pale tongue and a weak pulse.
Through these symptoms, Chinese medicine doctors will determine the problem and help your body repair Yin and Yang imbalance and restore health through acupuncture, massage, cupping, moxibustion, scraping (Guasha), Chinese medicine and other traditional Chinese medical treatments.

As people’s lifestyles change, pain related issues in the head, neck and shoulders caused by usage of digital devices have increased significantly. Some people experience bulging around the neck because of constant use of these electronic devices. In the view of Chinese medicine, this results in meridian blockage and toxin formation in the Dazhui meridian.
The “Dazhui” meridian point is located under the seventh cervical vertebrae of the human body. There are 7 meridians from the head through the “Dazhui” area to the lower limbs and 6 meridians pass through here to reach the upper limbs. This is the transportation hub of blood and Qi, and it is also the area within the body most prone to the accumulation of toxins. If this meridian is blocked, patients may experience a wide range of issues including muscle soreness, headache, rhinitis and more. Long-term impediment can lead to poor blood flow to the head resulting in hair whitening, blurred vision, difficulty in concentration, hearing loss, poor sleep, memory loss and even senile dementia. Long-term blockage can also lead to facial dystrophy, facial edema, eye bags, muscle relaxation, sagging, wrinkles and other facial aging problems.
Consequently, it is very important to clear the “Dazhui” area regularly. Methods for treating the “Dazhui” area include stretching the neck muscles, hot compresses, acupuncture, massage, moxibustion, cupping and scraping.

Toxins are the products of the body’s metabolism, which are produced every day and are also excreted by the viscera (liver and kidneys), which constitutes a complex and perfect human body. The pressures of life, bad moods, staying up late, drinking, smoking, eating too much unhealthy food and other bad habits will create more toxins. When people are young, their viscera function is strong, there are few toxins in the body and people are generally healthy. However, as we age, the function of the viscera becomes weak and the toxins increase and cannot be discharged efficiently. This constitutes the biggest cause of illness and disease and allows the body to induce the occurrence of various serious health issues such as tumours, metabolic disease, liver and kidney issues, etc. When the toxins start to accumulate in the human body, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, various muscle soreness, depression, impotence, irritability, anxiety, memory decline, inattention and other psychological symptoms appear, your body is telling you to detoxify!
Traditional Chinese medicine pays great attention to health and timely discharge of the body’s toxins. It is the first step in ensuring good health. As early as 3,000 years ago, Chinese ancients used scraping and cupping to release toxins. This also formed the earliest Chinese medical law because it was simple and effective. It is still widely used today by everybody from doctors in hospitals to housewives. Common local detoxification allows us to detoxify in time, prevent disease and to live healthier.
Commonly used local meridian detoxification treatments:
- Head scraping – headache, nervousness, sleep disturbances, hair loss, memory lost
- Shoulder and neck scraping – muscle soreness
- Facial scraping – improves skin tone and increases skin elasticity
